This term in Early Years and Key Stage 1, the children are learning about the United Kingdom.  Throughout the unit, they will develop their knowledge of Understanding Places, by naming and locating the four nations of the UK, their capital cities and surrounding seas and gaining an understanding of the different characteristics of each nation. The children will learn about the Human and Physical Geography of the UK by identifying key features of the landscape.  This unit will develop their Geography Skills and Fieldwork through using maps to identify key locations and geographical features.  They will also interpret aerial photos of landmarks.  Underpinning all of this learning, we strive to develop our pupils’ disciplinary knowledge.  As teachers, we will encourage our pupils to think like geographers.  We will model the way geographers question and explain reasons.  For example, Why might some people prefer to live in rural or urban area? Why might people not have a choice?

In Key Stage 2, children are learning about India.  They will develop their knowledge of Understanding Places, by being able to locate India on a map and describe the different climate regions; they will also improve their knowledge of human and physical features, focusing on different mountains, rivers and buildings.  The children will develop their geography skills and fieldwork by using maps and digital computing to locate different countries and describe their features..  Underpinning this learning, we strive to develop our pupils’ disciplinary knowledge.  As teachers, we will encourage our pupils to think like geographers.  Children will be taught to ask geographical questions such as ‘Do rivers harm or help people?’ and ‘How do the human and physical features impact the people living there?’
