British Values

British Values

You will have heard in the media how important it is for schools to promote ‘fundamental British values’ as part of our teaching of SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural).

Schools should:

‘Promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs’.

At the Althorp Partnership we deliver and promote SMSC through our strong school ethos that is consistent across the whole school community and by ensuring that our pupils experience a wide range of opportunities and activities that enhance their learning and understanding of life and people.

This is probably best demonstrated in our Partnership through everything we do and our interactions with each other. It is integral to the way we live and work with each other.

Our firm relationships with the local and wider communities show how we respond and work with others in a positive and harmonious way. All of our pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance. We value and respect each other’s beliefs and celebrate our differences by sharing our different experiences and practices. This helps to enhance our PSHE and RE curriculum and is reflected in the children’s work and understanding.

Visitors to the school as well as our support of charities allow the children to acquire a broad general knowledge and respect for public institutions and services and services in the UK. Fundraising for Children in Need and working with the local ‘e-safety’ team are two such examples. Our Year 6 children have attended a ‘Citizen’s Day’ where they benefitted from meeting local groups and services which helped them further in their education about life.

Our children learn about ‘values’ and we have 6 core values that we focus on across the Partnership. We feel that these values enhance our schools and ethos. These values are promoted through our teaching and times of collective worship. We use visitors to help to illustrate our values.

Our School Councils practice and encourage respect for democracy and provide opportunities for children to engage in the democratic process of voting for ideas that they wish to pursue on behalf of others.

We feel that our pupils leave our Partnership happy and contented in understanding themselves, others and the world around them in an inclusive manner. They will understand values that will make them better as a person and as a member of society.
